Understanding the score

Your TOEIC score can be translated into a CEFR level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) — the benchmark used by schools and recruiters across Europe.

The equivalence table

B2
Reached from roughly 785 points

Here is the approximate official mapping:

  • A1 (breakthrough): 120–224
  • A2 (waystage): 225–549
  • B1 (threshold): 550–784
  • B2 (vantage): 785–944
  • C1 (effective proficiency): 945–990

What each band really means

  • B1: you grasp the gist of clear conversations and write simple messages. It's the minimum required in many programmes.
  • B2: you follow a business meeting, read technical documents and express yourself fluently. This is the level targeted by most engineering and business schools.
  • C1: you work in English with no noticeable effort.
The TOEIC Listening & Reading only tests comprehension. To certify speaking and writing, the TOEIC Speaking & Writing test is the one to take.

Why this equivalence matters

When a school asks for "B2", it usually accepts a TOEIC of 785+. Knowing how to convert your score stops you from aiming too high… or too low. Always check the exact threshold required by your institution.
