TOEIC and CEFR: what level does your score match?
B1, B2, C1… The equivalence table between TOEIC scores and the CEFR, and what each band says about your English.
Your TOEIC score can be translated into a CEFR level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) — the benchmark used by schools and recruiters across Europe.
The equivalence table
Here is the approximate official mapping:
- A1 (breakthrough): 120–224
- A2 (waystage): 225–549
- B1 (threshold): 550–784
- B2 (vantage): 785–944
- C1 (effective proficiency): 945–990
What each band really means
- B1: you grasp the gist of clear conversations and write simple messages. It's the minimum required in many programmes.
- B2: you follow a business meeting, read technical documents and express yourself fluently. This is the level targeted by most engineering and business schools.
- C1: you work in English with no noticeable effort.
Why this equivalence matters
When a school asks for "B2", it usually accepts a TOEIC of 785+. Knowing how to convert your score stops you from aiming too high… or too low. Always check the exact threshold required by your institution.
