TOEIC Listening & Reading format: the 7 parts

Duration, structure and the 7 parts of the TOEIC L&R, explained one by one — so you know exactly what to expect on exam day.

Duration and structure

The TOEIC Listening & Reading lasts about 2 hours, with no break: 100 listening comprehension questions (around 45 minutes) then 100 reading comprehension questions (75 minutes). Everything is multiple choice.

Listening — Parts 1 to 4

The Listening section assesses comprehension of spoken English:

  • Part 1 — Photographs: pick the sentence that best describes an image;
  • Part 2 — Question-response: pick the best answer to a spoken question;
  • Part 3 — Conversations: answer questions about short dialogues;
  • Part 4 — Talks: answer questions about short monologues.

Reading — Parts 5 to 7

The Reading section assesses comprehension of written English:

  • Part 5 — Incomplete sentences: grammar and vocabulary;
  • Part 6 — Text completion: choose the missing words or sentences in a text;
  • Part 7 — Reading comprehension: questions about single or multiple documents.
